On Saturday, August 29th, men and women alike are invited to make their way down to one of Durban’s iconic beachfront venues, the Suncoast Casino promenade, to demonstrate their glamorous athletic prowess for a good cause.
Presented by Raise Your Voice in association with the Durban Fashion Fair, this fun-filled; glamorous event will see contestants compete in a 50m high heel dash and stand the chance of winning some fabulous prizes. The Winner of the Men’s Race will score himself a House of Monatic Make-over to the value of R5000.00 (Includes full designer outfit ) . The Women’s Race winner will garner herself adeluxe full Day Spa treatment at The Suncoast Towers Spa (R3500.00 ) PLUS a Mac Make Over (to the value of R500 ) and Designer outfit courtesy of Durban Fashion Fair . The contestant with the fastest time will get to speed home with a DSTV Explora .
Leading the celebrity charge will be Idols judge and style icon, Somizi Mhlongo, who is calling on his peers to join him and step into some heels for a worthy cause.
The world’s first high heel race was introduced in 2006 by Glamour magazine in Amsterdam. Since then, high heel races have gained popularity worldwide. From New York to Hong Kong, many cities around the world are organizing races of their own every year. These events are a global symbol of empowerment and solidarity for important women’s causes around the world.
In its inaugural year, proceeds from the Durban Heel Dash will be donated to The Open Door Crisis Centre; Kerr House and the Zimele Community Trust.
Zimele means “stand on your own feet” in isiZulu and the organization has spearheaded social development and women’s empowerment projects in remote and impoverished areas throughout KZN.Kerr House is a women’s refuge which provides shelter for women and children in crisis. It provides accommodation and meals for up to 17 mothers and children, as well as counselling and rehabilitation plans.
Contestants need to arrive at 11am with the races set to start at 12noon. Participants must wear suitable 2 inch (5 cm) minimum high heel shoes. No flats, wedges, boots, chunky platforms, or self-modified shoes will be allowed . Participation is open to anyone 18 and over and costs R40.
